Playground Zones

Skyview Ranch has 6 playgrounds and 2 schools but why does it not have any marked School Zones? There are only playground zone speed limit signs, showing a child chasing a ball.

The answer is that in 2016, the City of Calgary consolidated school zones and playground zones into one type of zone with fixed hours. This was done with input and support of the Calgary Police Service, the Alberta Motor Association, Calgary Board of Education, Calgary Catholic School District and other municipalities in Alberta.

All schools and playgrounds are now marked with Playground Zone signs like this:

The reason for combining school zones and playground zones was to make it clearer and easier for drivers to know that times and speeds would be consistent in any zone where children are likely to be. Originally playground zone times changed with the season. Now, all zones with 30 km/h limits are in effect every day of the year from 7:30 AM to 9:00 PM.

Drivers must obey the 30 km/h maximum through the entire playground zone until they see the “END PLAY GROUND ZONE” sign.

School and playground zones are set by the City of Calgary and not the Skyview Ranch Home Owners Association. City departments are responsible for installing and maintaining signs, crosswalks, no-parking zones and school bus loading and unloading zones

However, all drivers are responsible for obeying these rules while parking in or driving through our playground zones at any time between 7:30 am and 9:00 pm. Calgary Bylaw Officers and Calgary Police Service are responsible for enforcing parking and speed bylaws.

To ignore these signs in a Playground Zone puts community members at great risk, and puts the driver at risk of a significant financial penalty.
