What is a stormwater pond or wetland?
These are constructed areas which catch and hold rain water before letting it drain into the rivers in Calgary. Skyview Ranch has several of these areas which look a little different than the mowed and maintained parks and green spaces. The natural reeds and grasses grow wild and some ponds also have native shrubs and trees around the edges.
One purpose of these areas is to store excess water during rains and storms helping prevent local flooding of streets and homes.
Another reason for them is to clean the water which runs off streets, parking lots and lawns. This water often carries pollutants such as fertilizers, salts, vehicle fluids, bacteria and sediment which are damaging to the eco-system of the rivers. Letting the stormwater sit in a pond or wetland allows some of these pollutants to be absorbed by plants or to settle to the bottom instead of polluting the rivers.
Who looks after these ponds and wetlands?
The ponds and the lands around them are the responsibility of the City of Calgary. Skyview Ranch Homeowners Association plays no part in looking after their function and operation. The only exception is an agreement with the city which allows the HOA’s contractor to clear snow from certain paths within the fenced area.
What can you do at a stormwater pond?
Enjoy walking the footpaths around these natural areas. Appreciate the natural beauty. Look for wildlife such as birds and small animals.
What can you NOT do?
Signs at each stormwater pond advise the main restrictions at the ponds, however there are other limitations listed on the City of Calgary website. Things like dumping trash or garbage, dumping unwanted pet fish or animals are forbidden. Cutting grass or plants is not permitted.
